Waterbury (May 30, 2012) --- The Connecticut Defense Lawyers Association (CDLA) has chosen Augustus R. Southworth III as this year’s recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence. The award is presented annually by the CDLA to a civil defense attorney who has provided outstanding and distinguished service and contributions to the defense bar, excellence in practice, and the development and furtherance of the fair administration of justice and application of law to society.
Gus has been practicing law for over 35 years and has successfully defended numerous high profile cases. He practices in state and federal court in the areas of commercial and personal injury defense litigation, including medical litigation; representation of health care providers and hospitals in malpractice litigation; representation of physicians and hospitals in administrative proceedings, and regulatory and non-professional liability matters, including litigation; representation of private educational institutions; and representation of insurance companies in litigation and arbitration.
Among Gus’s many accolades, he has been named a Top 100 Trial Lawyer in Connecticut by The National Trial Lawyer, a Connecticut Super Lawyer in Personal Injury Defense: Medical Malpractice by Connecticut Magazine and has been selected by peer review for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America (Woodward/White, Inc.) for the past 19 years.
In addition to earning a stellar reputation as a defense attorney, Gus has acted as a mentor and advisor to many young lawyers through the years. Those he has mentored describe him as a constructive, patient teacher who works with associates from the beginning of a case to the end, teaching them everything from the nuances of discovery to dealing with evidentiary issues at trial.
“Gus has been a mentor to me for over 10 years,” says Isabella Squicciarini. “He is incredibly smart and he knows the intricacies of preparing and bringing a case to trial. But what is unique about Gus is that he explains and teaches each step of the way. He is well-respected, respectful of others, and has a great sense of humor.”
The award will be presented to Gus at the CDLA’s Annual Meeting on June 21st at Mohegan Sun.
