Isabella M. Squicciarini highlighted in the Litchfield County Times for her CBA pro bono award

New Hartford resident honored by CBA

Attorney Isabella M. Squicciarini was recently presented with The Honorable Anthony V. DeMayo Pro Bono Award at the Connecticut Bar Association’s annual awards celebration, “Celebrate with the Stars.” Squicciarini was selected based on nominations submitted to the CBA Pro Bono Committee.

Squicciarini is a partner in Carmody Torrance Sandak & Hennessey LLP’s litigation group. For over 15 years, she has practiced in the areas of medical malpractice defense, medical products liability defense, and personal injury/wrongful death defense. Attorney Squicciarini represents clients in state and federal courts in various matters. In addition, she also represents physicians and hospitals in Department of Public Health investigations.

Squicciarini served for many years as a member of the Board of Directors of Connecticut Legal Services. In late 2014, she began developing a pro bono project to enlist lawyers from her firm in regular representation of low income victims of domestic violence in need of restraining orders in the Waterbury Court. Squicciarini brought together legal aid, court personnel, and the local Safe Haven domestic violence shelter first to get agreement on the project structure, and then to train the attorneys at Carmody Torrance Sandak & Hennessey LLP. By the middle of 2015, the project was actively taking referrals and cases from the Safe Haven Shelter. Nine attorneys from the firm have been trained for the project which fits well with efforts by legal aid, the bar, and the judiciary to develop efforts that create pro bono practice groups in firms.

“Celebrate with the Stars” is dedicated to recognizing Connecticut’s top judges, lawyers, and professionals who make a difference through their work by demonstrating allegiance, dedication, conscientious service, commitment, and mentorship. Named in honor of the late Judge Anthony V. DeMayo (1924-2012), who tirelessly fought for fundamental fairness and championed the legal rights of the poor and accused, the award recognizes CBA members who volunteer for the Pro Bono Network. The recipients are selected based on their demonstrated dedication to the provision of legal services without expectation of payment to those in need.
