John Yarbrough is a partner in Carmody Torrance Sandak & Hennessey's Real Estate Group.

He has substantial experience representing issuers, underwriters, and borrowers in a number of tax-exempt financings involving projects for schools, hospitals, child care facilities, life care facilities, housing, colleges, and universities.

He also has extensive experience in commercial real estate transactions, for purchases, sales, leases and other real estate matters.  This often involves work for public utilities in connection with electric generating plants, electric transmission line projects, and related infrastructure property.

He also has more than 30 years' experience in representing Connecticut towns and cities, including service as town attorney, with respect to a broad range of matters, especially those involving land use law and permitting.  That experience is also helpful for clients who need zoning or other permits or who have other dealings with municipalities in connection with their business or building projects.

John is able to bring this experience to bear to help our clients reach their goals in straightforward or complex transactions, expeditiously and at a reasonable cost.

  • Led legal teams for acquisition for necessary easements and other properties for construction of six major electric transmission line projects, totaling more than one hundred and fifty miles, including title, negotiations and condemnations when necessary
  • Directed all legal work for real estate aspects of the sale of interests in companies owning a number of electric generating plans, both hydroelectric and fossil fuel
  • Financing of new buildings and major renovation projects as well as refinancing of existing debt for client, a preeminent independent boarding and day school
  • Representation of bank in connection with several private placements of tax-exempt bonds for two independent schools and a nonprofit social services agency, including work on loan participations
  • Represented issuer of bonds in connection with due diligence and documentation for financing of new projects and refinancing of existing debt, for a health system with numerous members and locations
  • Represented utility in the acquisition of a number of sites for its various business operations
