Waterbury (April 2, 2013) --- Thomas J. Sansone, a partner at Carmody & Torrance LLP, was recently received the Business New Haven “Citizen of the Year” award for his outstanding contributions to both the Greater New Haven community and abroad. Tom was presented with the award at the Business and Civic Awards Dinner last Thursday, March 28th.
Among Tom’s many local philanthropic activities, he is currently on the Board of Directors of the Clifford Beers Children’s Mental Health Clinic and is active in the United Way of Greater New Haven and the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce. He was formerly the Director of the United Way of Greater New Haven and the Chairman of its Board of Directors.
Tom’s volunteerism and generousity extends far beyond the New Haven area. In 2004, Tom and a group of his church parishoners began planning and raising money to support and develop a Kenyan Non-Governmental Organization called WIKS (“Women’s Initiative in Knowledge and Survival”) – a residential school for children orphaned by AIDS in rural Western Kenya. In 2009, Tom formed a 501(c)(3) charitable organization – WIKS-USA, Inc. – which raises funds and provides grant money, advice and technical assistance to WIKS for its residential school. The non-profit organization, of which Tom is also the president, raises money to continue the operation and growth of the school which, in just three years has grown from 32 students to 130.
“Tom is the personification of a big heart,” said Brian T. Henebry, Managing Partner. “He is engaged and active in wonderful organizations and is always exploring ways to give back to the community.”
Tom practices in various fields of civil litigation, including commercial, construction and insolvency litigation. He has tried more than 80 cases to conclusion in Connecticut Superior Court, United States District Court and United States Bankruptcy Court and has argued before both the Connecticut Supreme and Appellate Courts. Much of his trial work involves complex banking issues, including lender liability cases, contested foreclosure/collection matters and representation of creditors in adversary bankruptcy proceedings.
